For the third year running, the annual ‘Valentine under the STARS’ brought the crowd to their feet as they sang and danced in celebration of Valentine’s Day at the most loved classic-meets-pop open-air concert under the Cape Town sky. The Century City Conference Centre and Hotel played host to this iconic event as they too celebrated the official opening of their 1 billion rand development.
During this unique concert, myself and guests were entertained with magical and beautifully conducted performances from Xavier Cloete and The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Internationally acclaimed local soloists Magdalene Minnaar, Lynelle Kenned, Jonathan Roxmouth and Afropop sensation the Gugulethu Tenors completed the line up of award winning artists. Surprise performances by German crossover artist Cornelia Patzlsperger and the introduction of 16 year old Sabrina Alves moved the crowd and brought a few to tears with their renditions of some of the most celebrated classic love songs of all time. Over the days leading up to the event I had the pleasure of getting to know Cornelia and Sabrina, and can honestly say I have never met such humble women, and I cannot wait to see what the future brings for Sabrina. Cornelia on the other hand, I will see you at the end of the year in Munich as we bypass on the way to Italy for a family skiing trip!
The sold out concert which took place over two nights due to successful ticket sales began with a number of crowd favourites like ‘I Just haven’t met you yet’, ‘Will you still love me tomorrow,’ ‘I will always love you’ and ‘All for One.’ Classical hits such as ‘Barcorolle’, ‘La Donna e Mobile’ and ‘Je Veux Vivre’ also formed part of the program. By the end of the evening the entire audience were singing and dancing in their seats, and a surprise proposal by Marvin Bourne who asked his partner of six years, Cindy Cummings to marry him in front of over 800 guests made the night even more special.
Host of Expresso Morning Show and MC for the evening, Katlego Maboe once again won the hearts of the crowd with his quick wit, charm and the spectacular songs and duets that he performed. A showstopper for me was the performance by Lynelle of Whitney Houston’s, I will always love you, which has been one of my favourite songs of all time!
Guests were welcomed to the new Century City Conference Centre and Hotel, the new private equity business development by the Rabie Property Group who have been responsible for many award-winning, landmark developments in the Western Cape. Lovely hostesses greeted the audience with boxes of Lindor truffles (possibly too many) and having them experience the one of a kind Master Chocolatier pop-up station where the chocolatier was actually making the truffles whilst we watched. The winning couple of the Lindt South Africa Valentine’s Day competition was announced on the Sunday evening and the lucky couple Charl and Lauren will be heading off to Mauritius courtesy of Air Mauritius and LUX* Resorts & Hotels with a suitcase full of Lindt chocolate.
Concert founder and organiser Barbara Lenhard who I have had the pleasure of working with for a few years looked absolutely beautiful and was dressed in a stunning red showstopper by well-known designer Cindy Bam. On asking her how she felt after both events: ‘’We are overwhelmed by the love and appreciation that this event has attracted. Each year, the concert gets bigger and better and we love creating events that are unique and special to the city of Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. The addition of the second night due to the demand in ticket sales warms my heart as we know we have a phenomenal show and that we are providing something that the audience truly desires. We look forward to taking this event into 2017 and growing it even further. A big thank you to our partners, media and suppliers, especially you Kirsten who helped put this event together and make it a huge success.”
